He first attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst in order to study international law, but then transferred to Massachusetts Maritime Academy. While going to college, Capt. Phillips was a cab driver in Boston. Richard Phillips graduated from Massachusetts Maritime Academy in 1979. Capt. Richard Phillips married Andrea Coggio in 1987.

She was a registered nurse. They had two children, Daniel and Mariah. Capt. Richard Phillips enjoys snowboarding and is thought of by his friends and family as fun-loving with a great sense of humor.Capt. Richard Phillips had been aboard the Alabama, a US Maersk Line Limited ship that held 17,000 metric tons of cargo, some of which was charitable supplies bound for Kenya, Uganda and Somalia, for 8 days when an attempt was made by Somali pirates to board the ship in April of 2009.

Though the first attempt failed, the next day the pirates successfully boarded the ship. Capt. Richard Phillips and two others stayed on deck to confront the pirates while he ordered that the rest the crew to go to their safe room and lock the doors. Capt. Richard Phillips was taken hostage.While Capt. Phillips was taken hostage, the crew scuttled the pirate’s skiff by using the Alabama’s rudder and cut the power of the Alabama. When one of the pirates, joined by two of the Alabama crew members that had stayed on deck with the captain, searched for the rest of the crew, the Alabama crew captured him.

They tried using their captured pirate as a pawn in a trade for Capt. Richard Phillips, but during the trade, the pirate jumped into the water, leaving Capt. Richard Phillips as a hostage. Richard Phillips was a hostage on a lifeboat with the pirates for days before the US Navy sent in Navy Seal snipers that were able to get clean shots and free the captain.After a well-deserved break and many interviews, Capt.

Richard Phillips became an author and returned to the seas and the Alabama ship. A book co-written by Capt. Phillips has been released. A blockbuster movie was also made, recreating the harrowing events of those five days. There has been question as to the details of the actual events that took place, but many will always think of Capt. Richard Phillips as a hero who allowed himself to become a hostage in order to save his crew.
